Twentyfifth entry

Year 824, Twelfthmonth, Day 19 – Skyday

I feel guilty about enjoying my time in the village… Today we came upon a large fire pit with a large pile of snow. I cleared away some of the snow until a small face was revealed to me. All in all, we found 20 children. They were emaciated and their wrists and ankles were black with bruises. We pressed our march longer to make up for lost time. I fear if we hadn’t lingered in the village, we could have prevented their deaths. They bore no wounds, so either they starved or froze to death. The guilt I feel threatens to break my heart. Any tears I shed for them will never be enough.
